Online casino bonuses may look attractive, but it is essential to understand how they actually work. In this guide, bonus specialist Katrin Mets explains each bonus type in detail and what to watch for.
Types of Bonuses
The main types of online casino bonuses are: welcome bonus (on first deposit), reload bonus (on subsequent deposits), free spins, cashback (return of a portion of losses) and no-deposit bonuses (rare). Each type has its own conditions and requirements.

Welcome Bonus
The welcome bonus is awarded to new players on their first deposit. Typically it is a percentage of the deposit amount added to your gaming balance. For example, a 100% bonus on a EUR 50 deposit means an additional EUR 50, giving you EUR 100 to play with. Important: bonus funds cannot be withdrawn immediately. Wagering requirements must be met first.

Free Spins
Free spins allow you to spin slot reels without using your own funds. They are often tied to specific slots. Winnings from free spins typically also carry wagering requirements. The number of spins and bet size are determined by the casino.

Cashback
Cashback returns a percentage of your net losses over a specific period. For example, 10% cashback on EUR 100 in losses would return EUR 10. Cashback is usually credited automatically and has more lenient wagering conditions than other bonuses.

Wagering Requirements Explained
Wagering requirements determine how many times you must wager the bonus amount before you can withdraw winnings. If the requirement is 30x and the bonus is EUR 10, you need to place bets totalling EUR 300. This does not mean you will lose EUR 300. Playing slots with 96% RTP, you would theoretically lose about EUR 12 of that EUR 300. Different games contribute differently: slots usually 100%, table games 10-20%.
How to Choose the Right Bonus
Pay attention to: wagering requirement size (lower is better), bonus validity period, maximum bet while playing with a bonus, eligible games and maximum winnings from the bonus. A good bonus has wagering of no more than 35x and a reasonable validity period (at least 14 days).
Common Mistakes
Do not accept a bonus solely based on its size. Do not ignore the terms. Do not exceed the maximum bet (this can void the bonus). Do not view bonuses as guaranteed income. Always read the full terms on the casino website.
